Smoky, tarry flavors overlay modest plum fruit in this extracted red. Muscular tannins linger on the slightly dry finish. Has power, but lacks finesse. Best after 2008. 8,000 cases made.

Founded in 1998, Valenciso makes one wine released as Reserva. The 2002 Valenciso Reserva is a particularly fine effort given the difficult vintage conditions. The nose is nicely perfumed with aromas of wood smoke, cedar, pencil lead, blackberry, and plum. This is followed by a firm wine with plenty of structure but good fruit behind it. It should all come together in 4-6 years and drink well through 2020.
Pairing: Beef, Game Animals, Grilled Red Meats, Roasts, Stews.
Valenciso winemaker company was born during the harvest of 1998. After 15 year experience of shared work at the management of Bodegas Palacio-Cosme, Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso, decided to create a winery in accordance with their own experience and personal view of the wine. They decided... thus to make just one wine per harvest -always red Reserva- under their only brand, VALENCISO. Their filosofy is “one cellar, one wine, one brand.”
