In the 80s when Jose Maria Ruiz Benito, great connoisseur, already in those days, of the potential of the Ribera de Duero, had the great illusion of creating his own wine to pair with the sucking-pig, the emblematic plate of his restaurant: Jose Maria´s, in Segovia. In 1987 Jose Maria Ruiz... leads a group of Segovian wine lovers in a project to create a winery in an area of good red wines. They chose the Ribera de Duero for its geographical proximity to Segovia and for being the area with a great future inside the Spanish wines. Many studies proved that Carraovejas hillsides, very famous in Peñafiel is the best place to age wines in the area, was the ideal place and the tradition had proved it: the old men of the village remembered how the wines proceeding from Carraovejas were the most valued when they were released. Located only three kilometres away from Peñafiel, in a sunny spot of the river Botija valleys, a Duero valley annexo, the estate has a microclimate in which are conjugated the Duero sweetener effects, the dominant western winds, which enhance the good health of the grape, and the South orientation of the hillsides with soft slopes, protected from the harmful northen wind, and also from the spring and autumnal frosts. It is here where there is obtained what a good vineyard requires: Sun and air.
