What the critics say...
Robert Parker: 90 points(01/06/2011)
The purple-colored 2009 Prima is made up of 90% Tinta de Toro and 10% Garnacha aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak prior to bottling without filtration. Earthy minerals, espresso, truffle, licorice, and blackberry aromas lead to a ripe, dense, sweetly-fruited, layered wine lacking only complexity. Give it 1-2 years to fill out and drink it through 2021.

The wine called VIÑA SAN ROMAN is the product of Bodegas Mauro´s work in Toro where a new wine project has finished with the construction of a new winery: MAURODOS in Pedrosa del Rey (Valladolid). Maurodos owns several vineyards, 35ha, in the historic towns of Villaester and San Román de... Hornija. These vineyards are planted with Tinta de Toro which come from the same family as Tinta de País but adapted to Toro over centuries. The wines of San Román brilliantly reflect the characteristics of a climate classified as extreme continental. The winters are very cold and the summers hot and dry. The triple digit daytime summer temperatures are moderated by chilly clear nights. Our vines average age is about 35 years, due to long periods of drought, plantation density is low. However, in our new young vineyards we are increasing the plantation density.
