The first wine of this winery was named after its initials. At the beginning a red ‘clarete’ wine was made as a fine wine in the style of the Bordeaux “Claret” produced by the great chateaux’s of the Medoc. The success of the Cune Crianza motivated the Cune Reserva creation.
Winemaking:
The grapes were handpicked from selected vineyards, and fermented between 28 and 30 ºC after destalking. Following a full malolactic fermentation to balance the acidity, the wine was matured for two years in a mixture of French and American oak, with a racking every 6 months. After bottling the wine was cellared for at least a year before release.
The vintage / harvest:
Autumn was dry, with heavy frosts during December. There was rain following flowering, and by mid June, all Rioja was in bloom. Yields were generally low, and as a result, despite inopportune rainfall during August and September, the crop generally ripened well. Overall rainfall was 409 litres and sunlight hours 1650.
Tasting notes:
Deep ruby/garnet, good colour intensity, deep morello, autumn raspberries, plum and vanilla nose. Gently smoky & beautifully balanced. Full, deep palate, with complex autumn fruit flavours, balanced by a lovely touch of oak. Clean, long and robust. Good acidity and great length. Will drink well now, till 2012.
