Reviews of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse De Lalande 2005
A year of drought. From January to October rainfall was half the normal for the season over a period of 30 years.
This drought has to be considered in view of the fact that it comes after several years of marked hydric deficit.
Temperatures were normal and rainfall limited.
Milder than the seasonal normal.
Budding : 30 March
Mid-flowering : June 4th in warm and sunny weather
The months of June and July were warm and sunny. Temperatures for the month of August were close to the seasonal normal while being particularly dry with only 5 mm of water. At the time of the berry setting one could see that, though the number of bunches per vinestock was normal, the number of grapes per bunch was rather low.
Mid-Veraison : started August 7th.
The temperatures for September were around normal for the season. However two meteorological events should be noted : the temperatures and sunshine on September 3rd were very high and caused a certain fragility of the skins; then rainfall up to a total of 23 mm between the 8th and the 12th finished by penetrating the vine stock and the berries. This could have caused for the most fragile berries a tendancy to burst if the sanitary state had not been perfect The development of Botrytis cinerea was then limited and the sanitary state of the grapes was maintained in a remarkable fashion until late in the season.
Harvest : from 20th of September to 7th of October.
Serve between 12ºC and 16ºC
Optimal consumption period: 2005-2030
We recommend to decant the wine 1 hour before serving
Pairing: Aged Cheese, Game Animals, Grilled Red Meats, Legume, Roasts, Stews.
