The Alonso del Yerro 2008 is made from Tempranillo 100%.
The “Terroir”: The diversity of soils, all of them very chalky from the red clay typical of Ribera to the gravel sands, results in the complexity and style of the Alonso del Yerro.
The 2008 vintage: Our less hot than usual spring and summer postponed the vintage until the end of October, while favouring a slow and continuous ripening period. An aromatic, fresh and concentrated vintage.
Harvest: Grapes are from our own vineyard. We harvested from October 27h to November 6th, after thoroughly tasting the grapes of each plot. Manual harvest in cases. Selections made on the vine and in the cellar.
Vinification: Between 23 and 25 days of maceration in stainless steel tanks of 100Hl. Extraction with overpumping and pigeage. 12 months maturing in French oak barrels.
Tasting notes: Deep red colour. Powerful nose with ripe fresh fruit, spices and liquorice. The mouth, delicate and sweet-toothed, elegantly expresses the floral and liquoriced aromas of the Tempranillo. Fresh fruit, with a highly roasted touch thanks to the barrel. Silky tannins and a long persistence in mouth.
What the critics say...

The 2008 Alonso del Yerro, also tasted from a barrel sample, is first-class. It is not quite as seamless as the 2009 but is loaded with succulent fruit.

The current owners purchased this estate in 2002 and hired Stephane Derenoncourt of Bordeaux renown as consultant. The Alonso del Yerro cuvee, made from 100% Tempranillo, typically goes through ML in barrel followed by 12 months sur lie with batonnage in new French oak. The Maria cuvee (also 100% Tempranillo) is fermented in new oak vats, goes through a longer maceration than the Alonso bottling, and is aged in new French oak for 18 months sur lie with batonnage. As a side note, Vinedos Alonso del Yerro has started a new project in neighboring Toro called Paydos. I tasted barrel samples of the first two vintages, 2008 and 2009. They were both exceptional; the 2009, in particular, due to the virtually perfect vintage conditions in Toro.
